Our unique new International Summer School is an excellent example of this. Operated by Sedbergh School’s own staff, and providing 24/7 pastoral supervision, it has been designed to offer so much more than English lessons. It provides a complete British experience in which students not only learn the local language from the finest teachers, but become part of a quintessentially English community, come face-to-face with history in some of Europe’s oldest cultural centres and enjoy thrilling outdoor activities in some of Britain’s most beautiful countryside. Through practical projects, educational trips and an exciting range of activities, they also gain valuable leadership skills, lifelong friends and unforgettable memories.
Come to Sedbergh for a Great British experience!
Sedbergh School
When asked to name images that characterise England, many people would say ‘a cup of tea’, ‘the Queen’, ‘a British bulldog’, ‘strawberries and cream’...and ‘Sedbergh School’. Alongside Eton, Harrow and Radley, the prestigious Sedbergh School is one of only eight full boarding schools in the UK. Established in 1525, it has been attended by such luminaries as poet William Wordsworth’s sons, geologist Adam Sedgwick, England rugby captain Will Carling and Oscar-winning screenwriter Simon Beaufoy (Slumdog Millionaire).
Sedbergh is renowned internationally for its sporting excellence, achievements in music and adventurous spirit.
Superb sports and an adventurous spirit
Some 20 sports are conducted at Sedbergh’s own superb facilities. Supported by the School’s top class coaches, physios, nutritionists and sports psychologists as well as visiting international coaches, the School regularly produces U16 and U18 internationals in hockey, cricket, sailing, rugby, athletics and shooting, and boasts an impressive 35 full internationals amongst its alumni.
The School’s spectacular surroundings also make it an inspirational place for artists and a thrilling venue for the adventurous. Within minutes of the School grounds, pupils have immediate access to numerous outdoor pursuits including hill walking, climbing, abseiling, caving, ghyll scrambling, mountain biking, canoeing, sailing, camping, golf and horse riding.
Musical excellence
Sedbergh School has an enviable reputation for music. Pupils receive outstanding tuition in more than 40 instruments, and participate in the School’s five choirs, three orchestras, Swing Band, numerous ensembles and internationally lauded CCF Brass Band. A typical Sedbergh season sees the School present a major Choral Cathedral performance, choral, orchestral, Swing or CCF Band international tours, Masterclasses and Performances by leading international musical professionals, several major concerts and regular popular lunchtime concerts for the local community.

Course overview
The Sedbergh International Summer School is for boys and girls aged 11-17. Run by – and at – the historical and greatly respected Sedbergh School itself, it provides a fascinating taste of life inside a traditional British boarding school. Each child will be allocated a personal tutor who will ensure they are happy, in a suitable class and reaching their full potential throughout their stay.
It comprises a four week English language course starting on 4 July 2011. Students may elect to do a two, three or four week course, starting at week one. Alternatively, a two week course may be started at week three.
Sedbergh’s quality offering includes smaller than average class sizes: the EFL class will have 10 or fewer students, compared to the 15 typically found in other institutions. It also offers terrific value for money, with a higher concentration on English teaching. Comprising a minimum of 23? hours per week compared to most organisations’ 15, Sedbergh helps students to establish strong English language skills very quickly.
To put the English language teaching into context, Sedbergh offers introductory courses for:
- English for Science
- English for Business Studies
- English for Economics (particularly useful for older students who may be considering studying in the UK)
- English in the Community (ideal for younger students, who are given fun, practical projects to encourage them to engage with local people and practise their new English skills).
